2015 BODEGAS PORTIA TINTO
RIBERA DEL DUERO, ESPANA
A PORTLAND WINE MERCHANT’S EXCLUSIVE! Our friend Maria at Protos turned us on to this estate & we were blown away by the wines they are producing here. She told us that while it is a relatively new estate it has a very old soul! ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND OUTSIDE OF SPAIN! But we have our ways!
The vineyard are the origin of their wines. Bodegas Portia owns 160 hectares in the area of Roa, Gumiel de Izán, Villanueva and Gumiel de Mercado. In the heart of the Ribera del Duero. The land is the essence, land in which their wines are born, wines with temperament and personality. They have an intense aromatic profile and violet tones, on the palate they are unctuous and soft as a result of its extreme climate with autumn and even spring frosts, and harsh and long winters.
The grapes from this bottling come from old vines in Gumiel de Mercado, referred to as the "Golden Triangle" of the Ribera del Duero. Located on a slope with an excellent north-south orientation, at a height of more than 850 meters and dedicated exclusively to the Tempranillo variety. In it, sustainable agriculture is carried out, with absolute respect for nature, being the land itself what feeds the vine.
The nose is fragrant and elegant, mixing notes of red and black fruit with a sense of extreme harmony. Very showy. As much as it’s elegant it also feels powerful and serious, quite Ribera, with good typicity. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with polished tannins, and is supple and tasty and with great acidity and length. A balanced, elegant vintage, not showy or voluptuous, but more serious and developing complexity.

2015 MANDRAROSSA NERO D’AVOLA
THE ISLAND OF SICILY, ITALIA
COOKIN’ WITH RUDI! Dr. Vino is usually up to his neck in good reds (this month we go Sicilian) he is also quite the foodie too! YOU GOTTA EAT! And while he can & has expounded in length on the virtues of regional foods & wine matching, his latest endeavor to pick the wines to accommodate Rudi’s Giuliani’s soon to be released cookbook ‘Cookin’ with Rudi’ is turning out to be a major challenge. Rudi is a master chef and believe it or not when it comes to cooking he is very lucid. The book is comprised of recipes Rudi has collected over his illustrious career fighting crime & saving the World and includes some of the Iconic dishes from his travels to Russia, New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, the Ukraine & Russia (again) including Senators in a Blanket, Censure Salad, Partisan Pie as well as some of the current faves Supreme Court Upside Down Cake, Sautee Fraud Legs, Subpoena Souffle & the West Virginia inspired Manchian Two Ways, and the dessert dish that is currently taking Washington by storm Im-peachment Cobbler. The dishes are easy to prepare & quite affordable (with taxpayer money no doubt) & they can be enjoyed by members affiliated with either party. In our favorite chapter, Rudi takes us into the kitchen of Senator Ted Cruz as he prepares his signature dish Texas Fowl in which he amusingly confides with the author “that sometimes eating crow tastes a lot like chicken.” And if this book is a success Rudi is loaded with recipes that will be included in his sequel ‘Pardon my French’.
Which brings us to our little number from the Island of Sicily! Dr. Vino believes you don’t have to pay an arm & a leg to get a great bottle of wine & while most of our elected officials are on an expense account (ours!) we the people seem to have to balance the books at the end of the month. The 2015 Mandrarossa Nero d'Avola Costa Dune begins with an alluring aroma of sour red cherry, black cherry, ripe plum and spice. The medium-bodied wine tastes smooth and is loaded with red cherry, ripe raspberry and black cherry fruit along with some well integrated peppery spice and nice touches of licorice. It ends dry and smooth with a lasting sweet plum and licorice finish.

NV RISATA PROSECCO X-DRY DOCG, ITALY
Mother Nature’s retort to wine coolers, lite beer, alco-pop and other fizzy, cold, but ultimately unsatisfying industrial crap, Prosecco just plain rules. It is not about being super dry, toasty & yeasty (all things we love in great fizz from la Champagne)...it chooses to forgo the cerebral path and head straight for the pleasure centers of your brain. It’s lighter, zestier and more aromatic but never actually sweet, with crisp, refreshing acidity to take on almost any food or occasion.
NV CASA CANEVEL ‘ROSA’ X-DRY PROSECCO, ITALY
WAS $26! Rosè sparkling wine, youthful and attractive, made from Marzemino grapes: a novelty for the Valdobbiadene region. Strong rose-petal colour and hints of red fruit on the palate, fragrant and delicate. Appearance: bright, delicate rosé colour, fine and persistent perlage. Nose: delicate and fragrant berry fruit. Palate: light structure, lively. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
