2019 QUINTA DE LA QUIETUD TORO

CORRAL DE CAMPANAS - ESPANA

$20.00 BTL.

96 pts. – PENIN!  It’s been over Five long agonizing years since we have seen the wines of Quinta Quietud in the United States but the wait was worth it.

THE ESTATE:  Quinta de la Quietud is a rather new winery (their first vintage was 2000) yet the youngest Tempranillo vines on their estate are over 80 years old. Located in the Spanish region of Toro, which is the western extension of Ribera del Duero. Characteristically, Toro wines are the largest scaled, fullest-bodied expression of the Tempranillo grape in the world. Along with Vega Sicilia (Pintia), Numanthia & San Roman, Quietud (owned & made by the owners of the famed Bordeaux Cheval Blanc) makes up the best of the best that Spain has to offer. The 2019 vintage in Toro, as well as the rest of Spain, is outstanding offering up big, lush, layered, round wines that can be enjoyed right off the bat or laid away for decades. Best of all is that by importing this direct from winery to our store we can offer it for the same price that we offered the 2004!!

Quietud’s 2019 single vineyard Corral de Campanas was produced with Tinta de Toro grapes from a picture perfect year that delivered a healthy crop. The grapes are organically farmed from their estate vineyard in the villages of San Román de Hornija and were vinified by plot in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. It matured in a combination of French and American oak barrels for 12 months. The 2019 has to be one of the finest vintages here to date; the oak is perfectly integrated, and the freshness and balance will make it develop beautifully in bottle. It has ripeness and black fruit and is spicy, with a touch of licorice and ink. This wine has a lot of everything!

BUBBLES ON A BUDGET!

NV JEAN DORSENE BRUT

I CAN’T BELIEVE IT ISN’T CHAMPAGNE!

$10.00 BTL.

BEST DAMN $10 BUBBLES ON EARTH!!  We tasted through over 25 different budget bubblies in the $10-16 range & this Jean Dorsene was far and away the best!  We made a deal to get it so we could sell it for $10!!  Apple, brioche and pear are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge from the glass, adding considerable complexity and nuance. A short maceration on the skins gives this Pinot Noir/Chardonnay bubbly its volume and breadth. Richness and sophistication meld together beautifully here. This is a standout and at $10 it is a no-brainer for this holiday season.

NV CASA CANEVEL ‘ROSA’ X-DRY PROSECCO, ITALY

$12.50 BTL.

WAS $26!  Rosè sparkling wine, youthful and attractive, made from Marzemino grapes: a novelty for the Valdobbiadene region. Strong rose-petal colour and hints of red fruit on the palate, fragrant and delicate.  Appearance: bright, delicate rosé colour, fine and persistent perlage.  Nose: delicate and fragrant berry fruit.  Palate: light structure, lively.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

STEAL OF THE MONTH!

2015 MANDRAROSSA NERO D’AVOLA

THE ISLAND OF SICILY, ITALIA

$5.95 BTL.

COOKIN’ WITH RUDI! Dr. Vino is usually up to his neck in good reds (this month we go Sicilian) he is also quite the foodie too! YOU GOTTA EAT! And while he can & has expounded in length on the virtues of regional foods & wine matching, his latest endeavor to pick the wines to accommodate Rudi’s Giuliani’s soon to be released cookbook ‘Cookin’ with Rudi’ is turning out to be a major challenge. Rudi is a master chef and believe it or not when it comes to cooking he is very lucid.  The book is comprised of recipes Rudi has collected over his illustrious career fighting crime & saving the World and includes some of the Iconic dishes from his travels to Russia, New York, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, the Ukraine & Russia (again) including Senators in a Blanket, Censure Salad, Partisan Pie as well as some of the current faves Supreme Court Upside Down Cake, Sautee Fraud Legs, Subpoena Souffle & the West Virginia inspired Manchian Two Ways, and the dessert dish that is currently taking Washington by storm Im-peachment Cobbler. The dishes are easy to prepare & quite affordable (with taxpayer money no doubt) & they can be enjoyed by members affiliated with either party. In our favorite chapter, Rudi takes us into the kitchen of Senator Ted Cruz as he prepares his signature dish Texas Fowl in which he amusingly confides with the author “that sometimes eating crow tastes a lot like chicken.”  And if this book is a success Rudi is loaded with recipes that will be included in his sequel ‘Pardon my French’.

Which brings us to our little number from the Island of Sicily!  Dr. Vino believes you don’t have to pay an arm & a leg to get a great bottle of wine & while most of our elected officials are on an expense account (ours!) we the people seem to have to balance the books at the end of the month.  The 2015 Mandrarossa Nero d'Avola Costa Dune begins with an alluring aroma of sour red cherry, black cherry, ripe plum and spice. The medium-bodied wine tastes smooth and is loaded with red cherry, ripe raspberry and black cherry fruit along with some well integrated peppery spice and nice touches of licorice. It ends dry and smooth with a lasting sweet plum and licorice finish.
